PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a friction stir working method by which in friction stir working, the faces in workpieces in contact with a backing fixture can be worked smooth and fine, and therefore a worked body requiring no post finish working can be obtained, and to provide the backing fixture for friction stir working. SOLUTION: In the friction stir working, a thin layer body (20) having a smooth surface is interposed between the back faces of the working parts in the workpieces (31, 32) and the backing fixture (10) applied to the back faces of the working parts. As the thin layer body (20) having a smooth surface, metal foil such as steel foil, aluminum foil and copper foil, a metal sprayed coating and a ceramic sprayed coating are suitably used.
