PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine with improved reliability in washing and also in shifting between the washing and dewatering operations. SOLUTION: The washing machine has a clutch mechanism for shifting the rotation of a motor 9 either to a dewatering shaft 7 or to a washing shaft 8 by moving a sliding ember 30 in the vertical direction. The operation is shifted to the dewatering operation by engaging a plurality of projections 30d disposed at the lower end of an external cylinder part 30c of the sliding member 30 with a plurality of openings 19a disposed in a rotor 19 of the motor 9. A cushioning member 31 composed of rubber material, etc. is inserted between an internal cylinder part 30b and the external cylinder part 30c. The cushioning member 31 is located in such a state that the lower end is lower than the bottom part 30f, which is the lower end of the external cylinder part 30c without the projections 30d, and a sliding hole 30i is formed in the horizontal direction in the external cylinder part 30c. As the sliding hole 30i is engaged with a pawl part 30g constituting the upper side, concentration of the stress into the sliding member 30 is avoided when the rotor 19 is rotated, and therefore, the highly reliable clutch mechanism can be provided.
