PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide improved-quality multi-spectral zinc sulfide.SOLUTION: A method comprises: reducing metallic contaminants from an inert platinum foil by microetching and cleaning with sulfuric acid, nitric acid or combinations thereof, and further by cleaning zinc sulfide;wrapping the zinc sulfide, reduced in the metallic contaminants, in the inert foil; and treating the zinc sulfide by a hot isostatic pressing (HIP) process to produce low scatter water-clear zinc sulfide. The metallic contaminants are removed from the zinc sulfide substrate by ultrasonic cleaning, inorganic acid cleaning, organic acid cleaning, cyanide cleaning, cyanate cleaning, thiocompound cleaning, amine cleaning or combinations thereof. The low scatter water-clear zinc sulfide may be used in articles such as windows and domes.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
