The present invention relates to a method for preparing a whitening composition for external application to skin, the method comprising the steps of: adjusting the pH of water to 6-8; and putting glutathione into the pH-adjusted water to prepare a glutathione dimer, and to a whitening composition for external application to skin prepared by the method, wherein the composition has more excellent stability and a superior whitening effect.
