Styrene is polymerized with a catalyst RnTiX(4-n), wherein R is alkyl, aryl, alkaryl or aralkyl, X is alkoxy or halogen when R is alkyl and is halogen when R is aryl, and n is 1 or 2. The catalyst may be obtained by (1) reacting an alkyl titanate with a metal alkyl or aryl, or (2) reacting an (alkoxy)n Ti(4-n), wherein n is 0 to 4, with a metal alkyl or aryl; the amounts of reactants being 1 to 2 mols of metal alkyl or aryl to 1 mol. of Ti compound. The product of (1) or (2) may be used as such or the catalyst may be separated for use later. In examples the catalysts are, (1) and (3) Me2TiCl2 from TiCl4 + MeMgI, (2) PrTi(OBu)3 from Ti(OBu)4 + PrMgCl, (4) Me2Ti(OPr)2 from Ti(OPr)4 + MeMgI, (5) PhTiCl3 from TiCl4 + LiPh, and (6) Ph2TiCl2 from TiCl4 + LiPh.
