An endoprosthesis for a backbone comprises at least one flexible supporting member (14) attached to two fixing members, which are themselves attached to adjacent vertebrae of the backbone. Each supporting member is formed by a coil spring (14). In one of several forms of the prosthesis a protective cover (70) around the spring coils (14) prevents entry by nerve fibres when the coils open during bending of the spring (14). The protective cover is formed by a 'Teflon' (RTM) ring (70). USE/ADVANTAGE - The prosthesis forms part of the backbone, is reliable in operation and maintains the relative movement of adjacent vertebrae.
