A separator for battery electrodes is formed of a fabric woven or knitted from threads of molecularly orientated synthetic resin, the threads being shrunk after fabrication by heating the fabric to a high temperature, but not high enough to cause the resin to become tacky, whereby the separator is made rigid but flexible. The fabric may be knitted with needles omitted in contiguous rows as shown at 15 in Fig. 2, so as to become ribbed when shrunk, as shown at 15a in Fig. 4. The <PICT:0570894/IV/1> <PICT:0570894/IV/2> separators may be included in the battery in the form of sheets separate from the plates or the separator may be formed as a sleeve and slipped over the plate and shrunk thereon. Suitable resins are resins of the CH2 = C< type, such as solid polymerized vinyl esters like polyvinyl chloride, polyvinyl acetate and their copolymers; the acrylic resins, for example, polymerized methyl-methacrylate and ethylmethacrylate and polystyrene. |
