PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a carbon fiber having a high tensile strength, a precursor capable of obtaining such carbon fiber in a good productivity and effectively, and methods suitable for obtaining the above carbon fiber and the above precursor. SOLUTION: This carbon fiber shows a difference in elasticities K in an outer and in an inner layers, defined by the formula: K=(YM0 -YM1 )/D2 , which satisfies the following equation, K<=(-)5,966×10<-6> (YM)<2> +7.136×10<-3> YM-1.1 [wherein, YM (GPa) is mean elasicity of a whole monofilament; YM0 (GPa) is an elasticity in an outermost surface layer; YM1 (GPa) is an elasticity in a center; and D (μm) is mean monofilament diameter].
