PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a washing machine capable of exhibiting good washing performance and a method for operating the same. SOLUTION: An inner tank 22 and a pulsator 23 are rotated in the same direction R in this washing machine, by which the water flow along the rotating direction R is formed in the washing water stored in a washing tank 2. The transmission of driving force to the inner tank 22 and the pulsator 23 is thereafter shut off, by which only the pulsator 23 is rotated in a direction reverse from the rotating direction R during the course that the inner tank 22 and the pulsator 23 are rotated by inertia in the rotating direction R. Consequently, the water flow varying in the directions near the bottom of the washing tank 2 and the upper part thereof is generated in the water stored in the washing tank 2. The lumpish wash T put into the washing tank 2 is rolled by the water flow generated in the washing tank 2 or the rotation reverse from the rotation of the inner tank 22 and the pulsator 23 and is turned upside down.
