PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve power transmission efficiency in starting an engine and to prevent the generation of friction and sound in a one-way clutch after starting the engine in an engine starter with the one-way clutch disposed between a crankshaft and a starting motor of the engine. SOLUTION: The one-way clutch 8 is constituted into a ratchet type that a claw piece 82 is radially tiltably supported to an outer ring 80 to be connected to the crankshaft and a claw part 81a engaged with the claw piece 82 is formed in an inner ring 81 to be connected to the starter motor. A spring 83 tiltingly energizing the claw piece 82 radially inward is provided and, when the rotation speed of the outer ring 80 becomes a prescribed speed, which is higher than the cranking rotation speed by the starting motor and lower than the idling rotation speed of the engine, a radially outward tilting moment by a centrifugal force Fa applying to the claw piece 82 is so set as to balance with the radially inward tiling moment by the energizing force Fb of the spring 83.
