METHOD AND APPARATUS FOR DETECTING A FACE USING DISCRETE COSINE TRANSFORM COEFFICIENT

A method and an apparatus for detecting the face by using a DCT(Discrete Cosine Transform) coefficient are provided to maintain the exactness of the face detection and to enhance the detection processing speed. An entropy decoding and an inverse quantization relating to the bit stream of a DCT coefficient are performed(100). Thereafter, a candidate area of a face is detected by means of the low-frequency value of the inversely quantized DCT coefficient(102). In order to detect the candidate area of the face, the skin color area is detected. A noise area is removed from the detected skin color area so that the final face candidate area is detected. The face areas relating to the detected candidate areas are detected by means of hierarchic templates(104).
