The chamber is delimited by a bore (7) formed in a jacket (8) and by the respective fire surfaces (9, 10) of a cylinder head (11) and a piston (12), where the piston is movably mounted in the bore. The piston is movable between a bottom dead center position, in which the piston is far away from the head, and a top dead center position, in which the piston is near the head. The surfaces are formed such that a straight section of the chamber varies according to a position of the piston in the bore. An independent claim is also included for a functioning mode of a diesel engine having a combustion chamber.
