The urge of pigs raised under modern intensive conditions in stalls without straw, and fed on bruised grain, etc., to chew something, which results in tail biting and considerable financial loss to the breeder, is satisfied by means of a chewing strap. This consists of a long strap of chrome tanned leather with a slot at one end through which the other end can be threaded so as to fix it hanging from a support bar for the stall. The leather is made attractive by impregnating it with beet syrup, milk, lard, etc. and quickly produces harmony when the pigs are transferred.
|
