Drive unit control method for cars

The method has the degree of operation of a control element operated by the driver detected. From the degree of operation, a setpoint value is formed for the torque of the drive unit. In at least a first range of the degree of operation of the control element which includes the zero position of the control element, the setpoint value is formed from the degree of operation according to a first type of calculation but outside this range, according to a second type of calculation. By control of the drive unit, the torque of it approaches this setpoint value. Both calculation types take regard of the loads on the drive unit but in different ways.
