The invention provides a marker projectile (2) comprising a hollow body (6) having an opening at the front; a marker substance (22) disposed within the hollow body (6); and an expelling member (20) such as a metal ball within the hollow body (6) behind the marking substance (22); characterised in that the hollow body (6) and expelling member (20) are configured such that upon impact of the projectile (2) with a target, the momentum of the expelling member (20) relative to the hollow body (6) carries the expelling member (20) forwardly to expel the marking substance (22) through the opening.
