PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To efficiently obtain the objective coloring matter, especially to provide a reaction solvent and conditions of a coloring matter formation reaction for obtaining an asymmetric coloring matter which has been considered that the coloring matter has difficulty in selective synthesis. SOLUTION: This method for producing a methane coloring matter represented by general formula (I) (L1 to L8, L9, L12 and L13 are each a methane group; p1 to p3 and p5 are each 0 or 1; n1 is 0, 1, 2, 3 or 4; Z1 to Z3 and Z5 are each an atomic group required for forming a nitrogen-containing heterocycle; R1 to R3 and R5 are each an alkyl group; M1, M2 and M4 are each a counter ion for charge balance; m1, m2 and m4 are each a number of >=0 required to neutralize the charge of molecule; Q is a group required to form a methine coloring matter by nucleophilic attack of methine base; L1a is an active methyl group) comprises synthesizing the compound, for example, by combining a compound represented by general formula (IV) with a compound represented by general formula (II) in a dioxo type cyclic ether-based solvent in the presence of a base.
