An image forming apparatus having a fax function is provided to change a resolution into a resolution defined by a protocol even though an original scanning resolution is set to another resolution in a FAX mode or the like, thereby preventing deterioration of image quality caused by time required to convert an image from ultra-fine to fine and perform conversion processing. An image generating unit(2) is configured to generate image data from an original where information is described. A FAX communication unit(10) is configured to communicate the image data through a telephone network. An ifax communication unit is configured to communicate the image data through Internet. A control unit is configured to have a destination address table where communication conditions including plural desired resolutions in the image data and resolution defined by an Internet protocol are set. If communication by the ifax communication unit is instructed, the resolution defined by the protocol is applied to resolution of scanning of the original by the image generating unit and the image data to be transmitted.
