<P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image forming apparatus effectively using a detecting mechanism. <P>SOLUTION: A developing cartridge 16 includes a projection part 42 to be moved by input of a driving force. The projection part 42 moves through a detecting position of a new detection switch 43. The developing cartridge 16 is displaced between a pressure contact position and a separated position by a displacement mechanism 30. According to the displacement of the developing cartridge 16, a gear body 41 of a new detection gear 40 is displaced within a range including the detecting position of the switch 43. Therefore, the passage of the projection 42 through the detecting position of the switch 43 and the position of the developing cartridge 16 can be determined based on the state of a detection signal outputted from the switch 43.
