An insulating material comprises first 2, second 4 and optionally third 6 layers of primary material arranged to opposite sides of at least one elastic element 12. The sheets 2, 4, 6 are attached at regular intervals by parallel linear strips of adhesive 8, 10. The arrangement enables a change between a first configuration (figure 3) wherein the elastic elements are stretched so that the layers lie adjacent to the elastic elements, and a second configuration (figure 4) in which the layers of primary material 2, 4, 6 are bowed with respect to the elastic elements 12, 14. When bowed in this way, there is formed at least one cavity 18. At least one surface of the primary material that forms an external surface of the insulating material is coated with a layer 16 of metallic copper and optionally a wetting agent. |
