PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for calibrating acceleration by precisely acquiring the reference value of the output value of an acceleration sensor by a navigation apparatus for determining acceleration, based on the output and reference values of the acceleration sensor, and to provide the navigation apparatus. SOLUTION: The navigation apparatus 1 with an acceleration measurement section 2 acquires the output value of the acceleration sensor 21 when an automobile stops at an intersection that is created nearly horizontally in many cases, stores the acquired output value, and by averaging the plurality of stored output values, thus calculating a reference value that is the output value of the acceleration sensor 21 while the automobile is still horizontally. Additionally, the navigation apparatus 1 sets a weighting factor to two output values acquired in an orientation, where the advance orientations of automobiles oppose each other at the same intersection, and performs the weighted averaging of the output value weighted by a weighting factor when calculating the reference value.
