PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a starter 1 including an impact absorbing mechanism 5 displaying excellent impact absorbing performance and silencing performance against vibration during engine operation, capable of inhibiting enlargement of starter size and being easily manufactured and assembled. SOLUTION: Since a multi-stage type impact absorbing mechanism 5 is constructed by arranging many cylinder shape or disk shape cases 51-53 in order and in series in an axial direction of an output shaft 3, installing a cushioning member 50 therebetween not by force, fitting locking projections provided on the cases 51-53 on an bridge part of the cushioning member 50, and applying initial deflection (elastic preload) is applied in a circumference direction and an axial direction by the fitting assembly, impact torque in a circumference direction of a pinion gear 4 at a time of start, and axial direction impact by vibration impact during engine operation after start are gently mitigated with increasing absorbing capacity and high silencing performance is provided.
