The invention relates to a method for producing an aromatic carbonate by oxidative carbonylation of an aromatic hydroxy compound with carbon monoxide and oxygen in the presence of a platinum metal catalyst, a co-catalyst, a base and optionally, a quaternary salt, and an inert inorganic solvent. In the reaction conditions, the inert inorganic solvent forms an azeotrope with the water that is produced during the reaction, and this azeotrope is removed from the reaction mixture.
