PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the speed and to minimize the load of maintenance of a data storage system through the use of the random access properties of a semiconductor since a conventional data storage system has many restrictions such that the physical positions of blocks have to be continuous, the generation of the blocks for storage in advance is necessary, the generation of the index is required for retrieval and the time for its generation is long and, further, deadlocks fend to occur when an updating processing is executed because index update makes the range of exclusion wider. SOLUTION: A location table and an alternative table are newly introduced instead of an index. Plural records are stored in one block in principle. A variable length record and a span record can be handled. The location table manages the storage block. The alternative key block consists of an alternative key, a block number and a principal key value and retrieves the target record by searching the table. Binary search is a well-known and high speed method for the search of the table but other methods can also be used.
