At least one second carrier flow feed (2) is provided for a fluid with suspended particles (5). This (2) also discharges into the process chamber (3). Measurement stations (9, 10) examine particles (4, 5) in the carrier flows. First and second flows enter the process chamber in a downstream investigation zone, near to each other. The first measurement station is near the first flow, the second near the second, in relation to the flow direction, within the process chamber. A partition (8) separates the carrier flows. It is impermeable to the particles and/or the flows. In the process chamber a dielectrophoretic field cage (12) is located to fix the particles. This is downstream of the measurement stations. It is central between the flows, in the measurement chamber. Just ahead of the cage, a selector is located. This directs selected particles from either or both streams to the cage. There is a third measurement station for examining the fixed particles. Various further flow-directing and sorting provisions are elaborated. An independent claim is included for the corresponding method of operation. |
