PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an electronic camera capable of attaining a proper image quality using a display portion such as a permeable liquid crystal display, while securing a certain amount of composition regulation during usage under intense outdoor daylight. SOLUTION: An electronic camera (1) comprises an image pick-up means (25) for photographing a color image of an object, a display unit (15) for displaying the color image, a brightness detection means (33) for detecting brightness of ambient environment of the display unit, and an image switching means (33 and 38) for usually adopting the color image as an image displayed on the display unit, but switching to a monochrome image transformed from the color image when the brightness detected by the detection means is the one making screen display of the display unit hard to see.
