PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producingα-methylstyrene or cumene from solution containing cumyl alcohol and gas containing hydrogen in a fixed bed-flowing reaction so as to produce the objective material, theα-methylstyrene or cumene in a high production efficiency. SOLUTION: This method for producing theα-methylstyrene or cumene is provided by using≥0.1 cm/sec liquid superficial velocity and≥10 Ncm/sec gas superficial velocity. As a catalyst, any of the catalysts, capable of dehydrating the cumyl alcohol can be used. For example, a metal oxide such as silica, alumina, titania, zirconia, magnesia, etc., their compounded oxide such as zeolite, silica alumina, bentonite, montmorillonite, diatom earth, acid clay, etc., and activated charcoal, etc., can be cited.
