The system has fuel cell stacks provided with a set of fuel cells i.e. polymer electrolyte diaphragm fuel cells, which are operated with hydrogenous gas and surrounding air. The stacks and an electrical secondary accumulator stand in a direct electric connection with each other, and the stacks guide voltage to an operating area, such that reversible unloading of the accumulator over the stacks is omitted. The stacks and the accumulator lie on the same voltage level (UB), as a positive voltage side and a negative voltage side of the stacks and the accumulator are directly through-connected. An independent claim is also included for a method for operating a power supply system.
