an image forming unit configured to perform an image forming preparation operation and an image forming operation; and a controller configured to control performance of a user authentication operation according to distance information between a portable electronic device and the image forming apparatus, and to control performance of at least one of the image forming preparation operation and the image forming operation, according to the distance information between the portable electronic device and the image forming apparatus, wherein if the distance information indicates the portable electronic device is less than a first predefined distance from the image forming apparatus, the controller controls performance of the user authentication operation, if the user authentication operation is successful and the distance information indicates the portable electronic device is less than a second predefined distance from the image forming apparatus, the controller controls performance of at least one of the image forming preparation operation and the image forming operation, and the second distance is less than the first distance.
