Nitriding Ti values in a complex matrix involves; a) nitriding the starting material, typically a complex titaniferous slag contg. 30-80 wt.% Ti, with N2 in a reducing environment at elevated temp. (conversion to TiN can exceed 90%), b) chlorinating the TiN in the matrix to form TiCl4, and c) sepg. the TiCl4.
