Polyacetals containing units of formula (I), wherein R stands for H, C1-C4 alkyl or COOM, where M stands for a C1-C4 alkyl, alkali metal, ammonium and alkanolamine group, and m = 0 to 9, with K-values (determined by the H. Fikentscher method on the sodium salt in a 1 wt. % aqueous solution at 25 DEG C and pH 7) of at least 8.5. Method of preparing the polyacetals by polymerization of compounds of formula (II), wherein R stands for H, C1-C4 alkyl or COOM, where M stands for a C1-C4 alkyl, alkali metal, ammonium and alkanolamine group, R<2> stands for C1-C4 alkyl and m = 0 to 9, in the presence of initiators and possibly comonomers, and, possibly, hydrolysis of the ester groups of the polymers. Use of the polyacetals as additives in washing and cleaning agents.
