A transmitter on the vehicle directs a signal towards the road surface. A receiver on the vehicle intercepts the dispersed signal. the distance (6) of the transmitter (1) and/or the receiver (2) mounted on the bottom of the motor vehicle (3) from the road (5) surface (4) is derived from the propagation time, t, from the signal radiated from the transmitter to its reception. Upon attaining a threshold value, Smax, for the distance (6) at least one signal is generated to release a safely device. The value, Smax, lies below an angle of inclination (alpha) to be monitored. The upper threshold value (alpha) is pref. 22 deg. The signal can be i.r. or ultrasonic. USE - Early detection of risk of tumbling over.
