Thin film interferometer, partic. for chemical or biochemical measurements has a plane-waveguide as an integral optical sensor element possessing a partially covered, light transmitting, thin film. The light transmitting film (3) forms at least one measurement and one reference path length for the light and that the light transmission modes (6a,6b), following the measurement and reference lengths, can be combined to produce interference. USE/ADVANTAGE - Detection of fluorescent security markings, and path. lab. biochemical measurements, e.g. of immuno-reaction bodies, etc.. Robust and reliable interferometer where both measurement and reference beam optical paths pass through the sample film.
