TANK FOR A PAD-MOUNTED TRANSFORMER AND METHOD OF MAKING SAME

A tank for a pad-mounted transformer comprises: (i) a casing that is C-shaped in cross section and comprises spaced-apart parallel arms of sheet form and a rounded back wall connecting the arms and (ii) a combined front wall and bottom that is of a generally-L-shaped cross-section when viewed from a first reference plane extending parallel to the arms. The front wall is spaced from the back wall to provide an interior space between these walls. The bottom when viewed from a second reference plane perpendicular to the first reference plane, has a rounded periphery that nests within the C-shaped casing. The combined front wall and bottom has a flange that extends around its periphery, abuts the interior surface of the C-shaped casing, and projects away from said interior space. The flange is roll seam welded to the casing by utilizing a welding machine comprising a pair of roller electrodes between whichwelding current passed as the roller electrodes move relative to the parts being welded. This welding operation is performed by causing the roller electrodes to roll along the length of the flange during the welding operation.
