The present invention provides a magnetic recording medium exhibiting a high C/N ratio as well as having excellent running durability even under high-density magnetic recording.Disclosed is a magnetic recording medium comprising, on either side of a flexible nonmagnetic support, a nonmagnetic layer containing a nonmagnetic powder and a binder and a magnetic layer containing a ferromagnetic powder and a binder in this order, having an average thickness of said magnetic layer of from 0.01 to 0.3 mum and a total average thickness of said magnetic layer and said nonmagnetic layer of from 0.1 to 1.0 mum, characterized in that the number of projections having a height equal to or higher than 20 nm on the magnetic layer surface measured with AFM (Atomic Force Microscope) is equal to or less than 100 pieces per 30 mumx30 mum square as well as the PSD (Power Spectrum Density) of the magnetic layer surface measured with the AFM is equal to or less than 0.2 nm2 in the wavelength of from of 1 to 5 mum.
