PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a manufacturing method, whereby flickering of a discharge lamp can be suppressed when it is lighted at its early stage, and as a result, the need for applying sputtering treatment can be lessened, and the luminous flux of the discharge lamp at the time of shipping a product can be enlarged. SOLUTION: Electrodes 33, 34 and lead-in wires 35, 36 are first sealed to the end part of a glass tube 32, a rare gas and mercury are then introduced into the glass tube, and the hollow lead-in wire 36 coming out to the outside is sealed. Thereby, an impure gas generated in the heating and sealing process of the lead-in wires 35, 36 for the glass tube 32 is exhausted by subsequent evacuation, so as not to make the impure gas remain in the glass tube of a finished product. Therefore, there is no or little need for sputtering treatment to consume the impure gas before shipping the product, and the highly efficient discharge lamp whereby flickering is suppressed when it is lighted at the early stage is manufactured.
