A process to determine failure rates for data transmission over a power-controlled channel between base and mobile stations comprises measuring at least one signal/noise ratio (SNR) for the data channel, measuring a mean value for a number or SNR values from the coherence time of the channel and calculating the error rate from this mean. An independent claim is also included for a device for the above process.
