A static friction between a vehicle tire and a roadway surface is determined based on the evaluated accelerations. A maximum force (Fmax) exerted on a reversible wind-up tightener (4) is adjusted for pre-tightening a seat belt (5) based on the determined static friction, and/or a time period (t) is adjusted till reaching the maximum force.
