An image processing method comprises capturing 600 an image of a head mountable display device (HMD) user and detecting 610 the position of the HMD in the captured image. A region of the users face that is occluded by the HMD is identified 620 and at least partially replaced 630 with a corresponding portion of a 3D facial model, to provide a modified image. The method enables an image of the HMD wearer to be augmented with a pre-captured image of their facial features to restore those features occluded by the head-mounted display. The method may additionally involve detecting eye motion of the HMD wearer to enable eye motion to be captured and rendered in the augmented image. It may also involve detection of facial muscle motion using electromyography (EMG) to update the augmented image to represent the detected facial changes. The method may be used in a communications system between two HMD wearers, wherein each user is able to view augmented images of the other user in a virtual reality environment. A corresponding image processing apparatus, computer software to implement the method and associated communications system is also claimed. |
