In a folding apparatus for rotary web printing machines with a cutting cylinder acting against a collecting cylinder, to both of which a paper web is fed under pretension, via tensioning rollers, for cutting, the object consists in avoiding a springing back of the remaining transversely cut paper web, in particular when large collecting cylinders of adjustable format length are used. This is carried out according to the invention in that a strip-guide system is arranged, which commences directly upstream or downstream of the tensioning rollers, bears against the paper strand at one side, encloses the collecting cylinder slightly and terminates directly upstream of a feed-in point of the cylinder.
