In the device to compress a drawn sliver, the clamping roller (25) presses the transport belt (20) at a clamping point (26) against the sliding surface. The suction slit (21) extends as far as the clamping point. The transport belt is of a woven material. The sliding surface at the compression zone (15) is a curved guide surface. The compression zone has a hollow profile (17) forming a suction zone (16), with its outer contour forming the sliding surface for the transport belt to pass round it. The hollow profile has a number of suction slits matching the number of neighboring spinning stations served by it. The transport belt is powered by the clamping roller which, in turn, is powered by a roller (7) of the final roller pair (8) of the drawing unit (1). The suction slit tapers in the direction (A) of sliver (10) movement, or it is at an angle to the line of belt travel. The transport belt can be given a reciprocating movement across its line of movement. The upper roller of the final paired drawing rollers and the clamping roller are at a common spring-loaded rocker, fitted to the loading section of the drawing unit. The suction slit is wider than the compressed sliver.
