Reduction of nitrogen oxides in furnace emissions by combustion of fossil fuel in admixture with animal litter as an ammonia source

Reduction of nitrogen oxide emissions from industrial boiler installations fired with coal or lignite, by admixture with dried animal manures, particularly straw or wood shaving based poultry litter. The manure is comminuted to an average particle size of approximately 1-20 mm and fed at a rate of up to 30% w/w of the fuel mixture. An Independent claim is included for an installation for controlled addition of manure to a furnace feed which comprises a manure reception bunker (3), a first conveyor (4,5) feeding a silo (6), second conveyor (9), bucket elevator (10) and third conveyor (12) feeding a rotary sieve drum (13). Sieved material is conveyed via (16) to a rotary lock (18) controlling the feed to a belt-weigher (19). The controlled feed is blown into the furnace via a blower (20,21).
