Provided are a negative electrode active material for a lithium secondary battery which is high in capacity and is improved in cycle lifetime characteristics, and a lithium secondary battery containing the negative electrode active material. The negative electrode active material comprises 30-80 wt% of a Si or Sn activated metal microparticle; and 20-70 wt% of a metal matrix which comprises at least two elements, surrounds the activated metal microparticle, and does not react with the activated metal microparticle. Preferably the metal matrix comprises Cu and Al. The metal matrix comprises further at least one metal selected from the group consisting of Zn, Mg, Mn, Cr, Ti and Ge. Preferably the activated metal microparticle has an average particle size of 50-1,000 nm. |
