A method for cutting and trimming a workpiece incorporates high pressure fluid cutting jets directed at sites where the workpiece is supported by a cutting edge (7). The cutting action is enhanced by an elastic insert (8) along the cutting edge. The workpiece is held between the cutting support and an inner support during cutting, or it is held by press parts to combine press and cutting processes. The method can be used for trimming pressed workpieces and to cut apertures and other profiles. The cutting fluid, which can be a gas, is produced in an explosive action in a gas generator, e.g. by chemical means.
