The apparatus for inspecting empty returned reusable containers (110) such as bottles includes a light source (130) which generates light beams which lie in a light plane (140). It also includes a device (160) which enables movement of at least part of the light plane so that the moved part of the plane at least partly passes over and illuminates the container to be inspected. Light is reflected from the container. A line camera (170) at least partly records light reflected from the container. Independent claims also cover a method of inspection.
