Method of preparing a well for plugging and abandonment. Piping 10 (fig 1A) is moved longitudinally within the well to expose the side of the well or the cemented lining of the well. The piping is cut into sections, to produce at least a lower section 32 disconnected from the rest of the piping and an upper section 30 directly above the lower section. Cuts 44 are then made in the upper section to allow at least a part of the upper section to expand radially and pulling the lower section up into the upper section to expand radially and grip the lower section. Or, the piping is cut into sections to produce at least an upper section disconnected from the rest of the piping and a lower section directly below the upper section. Cuts are then made in the lower section to allow at least part of the of the lower section to be compressed and pushing the upper section down onto the lower section to force the lower section to be radially compressed and gripped by the upper section. Cuts may be frustoconical, be parallel longitudinally to the piping or circumferential around the piping. |
