A stream of acetophenone and hydrogen flows through a fixed catalyst bed containing pellets of copper oxide-zinc oxide catalyst (at least some of the copper oxide being reduced to copper) to produce a product stream containing phenyl methyl carbinol. The hydrogenation is conducted at 118 DEG C., 80 atmospheres pressure with a 3:1 hydrogen to acetophenone ratio at a WHSV of about 1. |
