The invention provides an emulsion comprising (a) a water insoluble liquid phosphate of formula I: <CHEM> where each of R1, R2 and R3 are the same or different and represent hydrogen, or an alkyl group having from 1 to 9 carbon atoms, or one or two of R1, R2 and R3 are aralkyl groups having 7 to 9 carbon atoms and the other two or one are hydrogen, and R4 represents an alkyl group having 1 to 13 carbon atoms or is a group of the formula: <CHEM> wherein R1, R2 and R3 are as defined above, (b) at least one emulsifying agent and (c) water. The emulsions are useful as hydraulic fluids or metal working lubricants. |
