Quaternary salts of N-(dimethylaminophenyl)maleinimides of general formula I, where R<1> and R<2> are hydrogen or the methyl group, R<3> is the methyl, allyl or benzyl group and X<-> is a chloride, bromide, methylsulphate or 4-toluensulphonate anion, can be prepared by the action of esters of general formula R<3>X, where R<3> is the methyl, allyl or benzyl group and X is a chloride, bromide, methylsulphate or toluenesulfonate anion, to N-(dimethylaminophenyl)maleinimides of general formula II, where R<1> and R<2> have the abovementioned meaning. As esters of R<3>X methylbromide, methylchloride, allylbromide, allylchloride, benzylbromide, dimethylsulphate and methyl-4-toluenesulfonate are preferable.<IMAGE>
