PURPOSE:To simplify the selection of an IPL device and to omit the jobs when the system constitution is changed by providing an IPL inquiry means and an IPL device selection means to a host and then an IPL device selection switch and a device control means to an external storage device respectively. CONSTITUTION:An external storage device 200 receives an IPL inquiry and an IPL clear instruction from a host 100 via a device control means 203. Then the storage device 200 sends an acknowledging answer to the host 100 with an IPL device selection switch 201 kept ON and then a rejecting answer to the host 100 with the switch 201 kept OFF respectively at reception of an IPL inquiry. At reception of an IPL clear instruction, the switch 201 is reset via a reset means 202. Thus an IPL device can be selected just by turning on the switch 201 of the storage device 200. As a result, the selection of the IPL device is simplified. Furthermore the flexibility is improved to the change of the system constitution since no program nor table to be corrected are used at the change of the system constitution.
