To compensate for tolerance variations the geometrical length of the recorded block is controlled by a regulating voltage. The end of a track (S1) in a block (B2) is terminated with an end-of-track code (8) and the beginning of the continuing track in the following block (B3) is encoded with a start of track marker (7). Recording is interrupted whilst the gap is timed and compared with the required time and the regulating voltage is derived from the resulting error signal.
